Deoxyguanosine monophosphate, or dGMP, is a nucleotide that is essential for DNA synthesis. As such, it has a number of synonyms that refer to the same molecule. Some of the most common synonyms include deoxyguanylic acid, 2'-deoxyguanosine 5'-monophosphate, 2'-deoxyguanosyl monophosphate, and 2'-dGMP. In addition, this molecule may also be referred to simply as guanosine monophosphate (GMP), which can be confusing given that GMP is also a separate nucleotide that contains a ribose sugar instead of a deoxyribose sugar. Regardless of the specific terminology used, dGMP plays a critical role in DNA replication and must be synthesized by cells in order for them to divide and proliferate.
