"East Tocharian" refers to one of the two extinct languages from the Tocharian family, spoken in the Tarim Basin in ancient times. The language is also known by the alternative names Agnean, Tocarian A, Tocharian I, and Turfanian. This language was discovered in 1908 in the Tarim Basin in Northwest China. Due to its location, it has been categorized as an Indo-European language, and its extinct status is owing to the influx of Turkic-speaking people in the area. Its surviving texts are found in the form of Buddhist scriptures, legal documents, and personal letters. Despite its limited survival, it is a fascinating field of study for linguists and historians alike.
