Abdominal hernia is a medical condition that occurs when an organ or tissue breaks through a weak spot in the abdomen. Synonyms for abdominal hernia include herniated belly button, ventral hernia, inguinal hernia, femoral hernia, umbilical hernia, and incisional hernia. Herniated belly button is commonly found in newborns and infants while ventral hernia is a general term for hernias on the anterior abdominal wall. Inguinal hernia affects the groin area while femoral hernia occurs in the upper thigh. Umbilical hernia is when a section of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall near the navel. An incisional hernia is caused by weakened muscle tissue at a surgical incision site.
