Accessory pathway, also known as an extranodal pathway, is an additional electrical pathway in the heart that bypasses the normal conduction system of the heart. There are several synonyms for accessory pathway, including aberrant pathway, anomalous conduction, bypass tract, and accessory conduction pathway. Atrioventricular (AV) accessory pathways are the most common type of accessory pathways and are often associated with a condition called Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which can cause rapid heart rhythms known as supraventricular tachycardias. Accessory pathways can be detected and treated through a combination of tests, medications, and procedures such as ablation, which aims to disable the abnormal electrical pathway and restore normal heart function.
