Acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is a rare but serious condition that affects the spinal cord leading to sudden muscle weakness and paralysis. Synonyms for AFM include acute flaccid paralysis, acute flaccid neuropathy, and polio-like syndrome. The symptoms of AFM are similar to those of polio, but the two conditions are caused by different viruses. Other synonyms used to describe AFM are enterovirus-associated flaccid paralysis and non-polio enterovirus-associated paralysis. AFM typically affects children, and there is currently no cure for the condition. It is important to seek medical attention immediately if you or your child experiences sudden muscle weakness or paralysis.
