Agkistrodon piscivorus is commonly referred to as the water moccasin, a venomous snake found in southeastern parts of the United States. Other synonyms for this species include cottonmouth, black moccasin, and water pit viper. The cottonmouth moniker comes from the white coloration on the inside of its mouth, which is often displayed when threatened or encountered. Black moccasin refers to its dark coloration, and the name water pit viper reflects its preference for living near or in bodies of water. Regardless of the name, it's important to give this snake its space and avoid contact as its venom can cause serious harm.
