An air sock is known by several other names which include windsock or a wind cone. It is a conical-shaped tube made of fabric which is usually placed in a high location that is exposed to the wind. The primary purpose of an air sock is to indicate wind direction and speed for the safety of pilots in airports. Windsocks come in different sizes, colors and materials. They are usually placed on masts, or roofs of buildings, and are also found on kites and gliders. Some synonyms include weather vane, anemometer, and wind direction indicator. These synonyms perform the same function of showing wind direction and are used interchangeably.
