Alnus rugosa, commonly known as Speckled Alder, is a deciduous tree native to North America. It is characterized by its rough, grey-brown bark, ovate to elliptic leaves, and drooping catkins that appear in spring. A few synonyms for Alnus rugosa include Smooth Alder, White Alder, Red Alder, and Tag Alder. Smooth Alder is a reference to the tree's relatively smooth bark without the speckles common to Alnus rugosa. White Alder is due to the light-colored undersides of the leaves. Red Alder refers to the reddish-brown twigs and buds, and Tag Alder comes from the tree's tendency to grow in thickets, or "tags".
