Altar of prothesis is a term used in the Orthodox Christian Church to refer to the table used for preparing the Eucharist. It is also known as the Proskomide, the Table of Oblation, or the Table of Preparation. Although these terms are similar in meaning, they may vary in their significance depending on the tradition. For instance, the Proskomide is the term used in Greek Orthodox Church, whereas in the Russian Orthodox Church, it is referred to as the Table of Oblation or the Altar of prothesis. The preparation table is also significant in the Roman Catholic Church, where it is known as the credence table or the sideboard. Although different names are used in different traditions, the altar of prothesis remains a central symbol of the Eucharistic celebration.
