Andesine is a mineral that belongs to the plagioclase feldspar group. It is predominantly found in volcanic rocks and is often used in jewelry making because of its unique orange-red hue. Synonyms for Andesine include sunstone, red plagioclase, and Labrador feldspar. Sunstone is a popular term for Andesine that is gem-quality and has an iridescent effect known as aventurescence. Red plagioclase, on the other hand, refers to the reddish color of Andesine that is caused by the presence of iron. Labrador feldspar, as the name implies, is mostly found in the Canadian province of Labrador and is sometimes used interchangeably with Andesine because of its similar properties.
