The antlion fly, also known as the doodlebug, is a small predator found in sandy regions. Although commonly referred to as an antlion fly, it is actually a distinct type of insect known as a neuropteran. Other synonyms for the antlion fly include lacewing, dusty-wings, and silk worm. The antlion fly is known for its distinctive hunting method, in which it digs a conical pit in the sand and waits for prey to fall in. Once a victim has fallen in, the antlion fly uses its sharp mandibles to subdue and consume it. Despite its small size, the antlion fly is an important predator within ecosystems, helping to control the populations of other insects.
