Arteriovenous Fistula (AVF) is a medical term that refers to an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein. This condition is primarily treated by creating a connection between an artery and a vein in the arm or leg, to enable the delivery of dialysis treatments. Synonyms for this condition include arteriovenous shunt or AV shunt, arteriovenous access or AV access, arteriovenous graft or AV graft, arteriovenous anastomosis or AV anastomosis, and vascular access device. Regardless of the synonym used, the aim is to create a pathway for the movement of blood to facilitate appropriate medical treatment.
