Artificial gas, also known as synthetic gas, alternately named syngas, represents a gaseous mixture that includes hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and often carbon dioxide. Synonyms for artificial gas include town gas, producer gas, and water gas. Town gas was derived from coal and used as a heating fuel before natural gas and electricity became more prevalent. Producer gas was widely used during World War II for vehicles and manufacturing. Water gas, as the name implies, is produced by reacting steam with coal or coke, and was also used for heating and illumination before more efficient forms of energy became available. These synonyms for artificial gas may have historical significance, but they are no longer widely used today.
