Auto courts, also known as motor courts or tourist camps, were initially popular lodging options for drivers during the mid-20th century. These lodgings provided individual cabins or small groups of rooms built around a central parking lot for travelers to park their vehicles. Some of the synonyms for the term auto courts include motels, motor inns, and roadside lodges. Motels and motor inns have become more popular and are still operational to serve drivers primarily in suburban and rural areas. Good examples of motor inns/motels include Ramada Inn and Holiday Inn. Although the popularity of roadside lodgings has declined, they remain part of the American road travel history.
