Several synonyms exist for autoimmune encephalitis, including autoimmune limbic encephalitis, anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, anti-AMPA receptor encephalitis, and paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis. Anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis is perhaps the most well-known form of autoimmune encephalitis, characterized by hallucinations, seizures, memory issues, and decreased consciousness. Meanwhile, anti-AMPA receptor encephalitis is a rare variant of the condition that occurs when the immune system attacks a different type of brain cell receptor.
