Avoidant Personality Disorder (AVPD) is a mental health condition characterized by extreme social anxiety, low self-esteem, and a pervasive pattern of avoidance in social situations for fear of rejection or humiliation. It is also commonly referred to as Anxious Personality Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, or Shy Personality Disorder. Other synonyms for AVPD might include Avoidant Personality Type, Avoidant Personality Pattern, or Avoidant Behavior. While these synonyms are not necessarily interchangeable with AVPD they all describe a similar set of symptoms and behaviors. People with AVPD often struggle to form close relationships, may be overly self-conscious and have difficulty expressing emotions. Treatment may include psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or medications to manage anxiety symptoms.
