Balloon tamponade, a medical procedure used to control bleeding, may be accomplished via several methods. One alternative is to use a Sengstaken-Blakemore tube that contains an esophageal and gastric balloon. Another option is the Minnesota tube, which includes both stomach and duodenal balloons. Balloon catheter tamponade is a technique for arresting severe bleeding from esophageal varices, postpartum hemorrhage, and other conditions. The Foley catheter tamponade is another kind of balloon tamponade. The idea is to put a catheter beyond the bleeding area, inflate the balloon to apply pressure on the bleeding area, and prevent further bleeding. Generally, various types of balloon tamponades exist to provide support to stop hemorrhage.
