The Baltic Sea is a unique body of water that borders several countries in Northern Europe. Although it is commonly referred to by its official name, there are a number of synonyms for the Baltic Sea depending on the language and culture. In Swedish, for example, it is called Östersjön, while in Finnish it is known as Itämeri. The German name for the sea is Ostsee, while in Danish and Norwegian it is referred to as Østersøen.
