The Battle of Rocroi was one of the most significant confrontations in early modern European warfare. This engagement was also known as the Battle of Rocroy or Rocroy, as well as the Battle of Thionville. It was fought during the Thirty Years' War between the Spanish Habsburg army, led by the Duke of Albuquerque, and the French army, commanded by Duke d'Enghien, in May 1643. Other synonyms for this battle may include the Battle of Rouvroi, Battle of Ettelbruck, War of Devolution, and the Siege of Luxembourg. No matter what it is called, however, it all refers to the same climactic military encounter in the seventeenth century.
