Bedloes Island is a small island located in New York Harbor. Synonyms for Bedloes Island include Liberty Island, which is home to the Statue of Liberty; Fort Wood Island, named after Colonel Eleazer Derby Wood who oversaw the construction of Fort Wood, an old military fort located on the island; and Bedloe's Battery, named after Isaac Bedloe, who leased the island in the late 1800s. The island has been used as a military post, an immigration station, and a National Monument. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction, drawing millions of visitors from all over the world each year.
