Beleaguerment refers to a state of being under siege or attacked. Some synonyms that can be used in its place include besiegement, blockage, encirclement, harassment, oppression, and quarantine. Besiegement suggests a besieging army or force that cuts off all supplies, while blockage refers to obstruction or closing off of a passageway. Encirclement can be used to suggest a physical encircling of a place or a situation in which one feels trapped. Harassment and oppression both suggest a situation in which one is subjected to constant and unfair treatment. Quarantine can refer to a period of isolation, often imposed to prevent the spread of disease.
