Biobanks, or repositories of biological samples and data, are essential resources for scientific and medical research. However, there are several synonyms for this term, which are used interchangeably depending on the context or region. For instance, some publications describe biobanks as biorepositories, biospecimen banks, or tissue banks. In some countries, such as Japan, they are called "life science databases," while in Europe, they are referred to as "biological resource centers." Other related terms include biobanking, biopreservation, and biosampling. Regardless of the term used, biobanks remain critical for advancing our understanding of genetic and environmental factors that influence health and disease, and for developing personalized therapies.
