Bison occidentalis is commonly known as the Western Bison or the Late Bison. It is an extinct species of bison that roamed North America during the Pleistocene epoch. Other synonyms for this species include Bison antiquus, Bison latifrons, and Bison americanus, all of which are now considered to be members of the same species. The Western Bison was known for its massive size, with some specimens growing up to 8 feet tall and weighing over 2,000 pounds. Sadly, human hunting and habitat loss led to the extinction of this iconic species around 10,000 years ago. Today, bison populations are slowly recovering thanks to conservation efforts.
