Bronchiolitis Obliterans Organizing Pneumonia (BOOP) is a rare lung condition characterized by inflammation and scarring in the small airways and air sacs of the lungs. Also known as Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia (COP), this condition causes respiratory symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue. BOOP is sometimes referred to as Non-specific Interstitial Pneumonia (NSIP) due to its clinical and radiological similarities with other interstitial lung diseases. Another term used interchangeably for BOOP is Granulomatous Interstitial Lung Disease (GILD), highlighting the presence of granulomas in the lung tissue. Although its exact cause is unknown, BOOP is often treated with corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and promote lung healing. Early diagnosis and prompt intervention can improve outcomes for individuals with BOOP.
