Burning ghat, also known as cremation ground, pyre site or funeral pyre, refers to a sacred place where Hindus cremate their deceased loved ones. It is believed that by cremating the body, the soul is released from the cycle of reincarnation and attains moksha or liberation. Other synonyms for burning ghat include ashram, death temple, final resting place, holy ground, last rites center, and ritual site. These terms portray the significance and respect accorded to the final act of laying the mortal remains to rest. Burning ghats dot major Indian rivers, and some of the most famous ones are in Varanasi, Haridwar, and Allahabad.
