Capgras delusion, also known as the Capgras syndrome, is a rare psychiatric disorder that causes individuals to believe that their loved ones have been replaced by imposters or doppelgangers. This condition is also sometimes referred to as the Imposter syndrome, Fregoli delusion, and the Subjective doubles phenomenon. The term Capgras delusion is derived from the name of the French psychiatrist Joseph Capgras, who first described the condition in 1923. Other synonyms for Capgras delusion include the illusion of doubles, misidentification syndrome, and intermetamorphosis. In essence, these terms all describe a similar experience in which the affected person believes that someone they know has been replaced or transformed into a different person.
