Caput succedaneum refers to a swelling that appears on the top of a newborn's head after delivery. This swelling is caused by fluid accumulation in the soft tissues of the head due to the pressure exerted during the birthing process. While there are no exact synonyms for the term, it may also be referred to as cephalohematoma or subgaleal hematoma. Cephalohematoma is a more localized hemorrhage in the cranium, while subgaleal hematoma is a collection of blood that forms under the scalp. Although these terms may be used interchangeably, they describe different conditions with similar symptoms to caput succedaneum.
