The Caspian tiger, also known as the Persian tiger, was a subspecies of the tiger that became extinct in the 20th century. There are a few different synonyms for this majestic animal, such as the Turan tiger or the Central Asian tiger. In Persian literature, it was sometimes referred to as the Hyrcanian tiger, as it used to roam the Hyrcanian forests south of the Caspian Sea. The Caspian tiger was also sometimes called the Caspian Man-eater due to its reputation for occasionally attacking and killing humans. Whilst these synonyms may not be widely used, they all reflect the awe and respect that this magnificent animal commanded.
