Catabatic winds, also known as katabatic winds, are powerful downward gusts that develop when cold air accumulates on elevated terrain and then rushes down to lower elevations. These winds are also commonly referred to as "mountain winds" or "gravity winds" due to the fact that they are caused by gravity and the shape of the land. Another synonym for catabatic wind is "anabatic wind", which is a wind that moves uphill instead of downhill. Additionally, these winds are sometimes called "kava" by the people of Fiji, "bora" by those in Croatia and Italy, and "mistral" by the people of France. Despite these different names, the effects of catabatic winds can be felt around the world.
