Chief of Naval Operations, also known as CNO, is the highest-ranking officer in the United States Navy. However, there are many synonyms for this position, including Commander-in-Chief, Naval Operations; Fleet Admiral; Admiral of the Fleet; Admiral of the Navy; and Admiral. While the title may differ, the responsibilities of the position remain the same - overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Navy, advising the President and Secretary of Defense on naval matters, and ensuring that the Navy is prepared to carry out its mission at all times. Regardless of the title, the Chief of Naval Operations plays a critical role in the United States military hierarchy.
