Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating condition that causes chronic pain, inflammation, and swelling in one or more limbs. Also known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), the disorder can lead to limited mobility, muscle stiffness, and skin sensitivity. Other synonyms for CRPS or RSD may include sympathetically maintained pain syndrome (SMPS), chronic pain syndrome, and shoulder-hand syndrome. Some healthcare providers may also refer to the condition as neuropathic pain syndrome, emphasizing the involvement of the nervous system in the development and persistence of symptoms. Regardless of the terminology, early diagnosis and treatment are critical in managing the pain and improving overall quality of life for people living with CRPS.
