A concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) is a term used to describe a large number of animals that are confined, fed and raised in the same location. Although the term CAFO is commonly used, there are several synonyms for this term that are used to describe similar facilities. Industrial livestock operations, factory farms, and intensive animal agriculture are some examples of these synonyms. These terms are often used to describe large-scale animal production that is designed to maximize efficiency and profit at the expense of animal welfare and environmental sustainability. While CAFOs and their synonyms are increasingly controversial, they supply the vast majority of meat, dairy and eggs for the world's population.
