The currency is commonly referred to as the West African CFA franc, which stands for "Communaute Financiere Africaine franc" in French. The currency is also sometimes referred to as the BCEAO franc, which stands for "Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest franc" in French. The CFA franc is used by several countries in West and Central Africa, all of which are former French colonies.
