The Cozumel raccoon, also known as the pygmy raccoon or Procyon pygmaeus, is a small endemic species that inhabits the Cozumel Island in Mexico. Although it has a unique name, there are still alternative synonyms to describe this elusive mammal. Some of them include Cozumel Island raccoon, dwarf raccoon, or Cozumel ring-tailed cat. Moreover, the scientific name Procyon pygmaeus highlights its distinction as a smaller relative of the common raccoon Procyon lotor. Despite the different names, the Cozumel raccoon shares similar physical and behavioral features with its larger cousin, including its omnivorous diet and nocturnal habits.
