Crime prevention through environmental design can also be referred to as CPTED, or it may be called environmental criminology. Other synonyms for this phrase include crime proofing, security by design, situational crime prevention, and defensible space. Essentially, all of these terms refer to the idea that the built environment we live and work in can either deter or promote criminal activity. By designing and planning our environment with crime prevention in mind, we can create safer spaces for everyone. This includes using principles such as natural surveillance, access control, territoriality, and maintenance to make crimes more difficult and less attractive to potential offenders.
