Cuon alpinus, commonly known as the dhole, Asiatic wild dog, or Indian wild dog, is a species of canid found in South and Southeast Asia. The dhole is an apex predator and closely resembles domestic dogs in appearance. Synonyms for the dhole include Canis dhole, Cuon dhole, and Canis alpinus. However, recent DNA analysis has classified the dhole as a distinct species, Cuon alpinus. The dhole is known for its highly social behavior and hunting prowess, often taking down prey much larger than themselves. Sadly, due to habitat destruction and hunting, the dhole is listed as endangered and is in need of conservation efforts to ensure its survival.
