Cyclo Oxygenase (COX) is an enzyme that is responsible for the production of prostaglandins that help in maintaining the balance of the body. Synonyms for the word COX include prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase (PTGS), PGH synthase, and arachidonate cyclooxygenase. These synonyms refer to the same enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins. Moreover, COX is classified into two isoforms, COX-1 and COX-2, where COX-1 is constitutive and is involved in maintaining the normal cellular functions, while COX-2 is inducible and is involved in inflammation and pain. The identification and understanding of COX have helped in the development of drugs like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which inhibit the activity of COX and reduce inflammation.
