Deadeyes are often referred to as "blocks," "pulleys," or "sheaves" and used to create mechanical advantage in various applications. They can also be called "thimbles," which are used to protect the eyes of the rope from wear and tear. Deadman's eyes, horse eyes, bull's eyes, and navigator's eyes are all other synonyms for deadeyes. Some other nautical terms include a "lubber's hole," which is a hole in a deadeye for sailors to put their fingers through, and a "ratline," which is a rope ladder that is attached to the shrouds of the deadeye. Regardless of their name, deadeyes are an essential part of most rigging systems.
