Decompression disease, also known as "the bends", occurs when a person ascends from a high-pressure environment (such as scuba diving) too quickly, causing nitrogen bubbles to form in the blood and tissues. Other terms used to refer to this condition include arterial gas embolism, gas bubble disease, and Caisson disease. Although decompression sickness and decompression illness are often used interchangeably with decompression disease, they can also refer to other medical conditions caused by changes in atmospheric pressure, such as barotrauma.
