Democide refers to the intentional killing of individuals by a government or its agents. Although the term democide is relatively new, similar terms have been used throughout history. In ancient times, the term genocide was used to describe the deliberate and systematic extermination of a racial or ethnic group. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the term massacre was often used to describe state-sponsored violence against a particular group. Other words that can be used as synonyms for democide include genocide, extermination, annihilation, mass murder, ethnic cleansing, and purge. Regardless of the term used, the act of democide is a horrendous crime against humanity.
