A dependent economy is often referred to as a country that heavily relies on another country's economy for its survival. There are several other synonyms that can describe this economic situation. Some of them include; subordinate economy, underdeveloped economy, secondary economy, reliance economy, client economy, and low-income economy. All these synonyms indicate that the country has a weak or underdeveloped economy that cannot sustain itself without external support. A dependent economy is characterized by high levels of unemployment, poverty, and low production levels. The economy is often focused on producing raw materials that are exported to other countries, with little value addition, leading to a highly imbalanced trade system.
