Diadems are simply defined as crowns or headbands worn especially by royalty or people of high ranks. The term, however, is not widely used today. There are other synonyms that can be used to describe diadems such as coronets, circlets, tiaras, or headpieces. Coronets are small crown-like adornments usually made of precious metals like gold or silver and studded with precious stones. Circlets, on the other hand, are smaller and simpler versions of a diadem, almost like a headband. Tiaras are elaborate, ornamental headpieces with a high arch worn chiefly by women on formal occasions. Headpieces can be any kind of ornament used to adorn the head, making it a more general term.
