Diploid number refers to the number of chromosome sets found in a cell's nucleus. Among the synonyms for this particular term are 2n or double haploid. Other related terms for diploid number include somatic cells, as opposed to gamete or reproductive cells, and homologous chromosomes, which describe chromosome sets that have the same genes in the same positions. The half of the diploid number, called haploid number, is denoted as n. Scientists use different synonyms for these terms in different occasions, but nonetheless they all refer to the genetic composition of a cell, specifically the number of chromosome sets the cell possesses.
