Dipteryx odorata is a type of tree native to South America, commonly known as tonka bean or coumarin. Synonyms for Dipteryx odorata include Cumaru, Tongo, and Tonquin Bean. These trees can grow up to 30 meters tall and have a dense, round crown of leaves. The tonka bean has a strong, sweet vanilla-like aroma and is used in the production of perfumes, cosmetics, and flavorings. The coumarin in tonka bean is also used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant properties. Despite its many uses, Dipteryx odorata is becoming increasingly rare due to deforestation and over-harvesting.
