Division Gymnomycota is a phylum in the fungi kingdom that includes organisms commonly known as the "imperfect fungi." These fungi lack a defined sexual stage and reproduce asexually through spores or other means. In modern classification systems, the term Gymnomycota is no longer used, and these fungi are classified as Ascomycota or Deuteromycetes. Ascomycota refers to the fungi that produce spores inside sac-like structures called asci, whereas Deuteromycetes refers to fungi that are not classified into any of the other major phyla. Regardless of classification, these fungi play important roles in decomposition, plant pathology, and as sources of food and medicine.
