Docosahexaenoic Acid, commonly referred to as DHA, is an omega-3 fatty acid that is found in abundance in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines. It is vital for brain health, eye health and cognitive function. Synonyms for DHA include cervonic acid, hexadecatetraenoic acid, and octadecapentaenoic acid. Other related omega-3 fatty acids include eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). EPA is found primarily in marine sources while ALA is commonly found in plant sources such as flaxseed and chia seeds. While DHA is essential for maintaining good health, it is not produced in sufficient quantities by the body and thus must be obtained through diet or supplements.
