A door-to-door salesman may also be referred to as a canvasser, pitchman, peddler, hawker or traveling salesperson. These terms all describe someone who goes from house to house or business to business, trying to sell their products or services. Canvassers typically focus on surveying potential customers to gauge interest in a particular product or service. Pitchmen employ persuasive techniques and demonstrate products. Peddlers usually sell inexpensive items such as cleaning supplies or toys. Hawkings usually refer to selling goods or food items. Traveling salespeople also visit clients but have a more customized approach to sales by building long-term relationships. Regardless of the term, the goal is the same: to make a sale.
