The East African shilling is the official currency used in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. In Tanzania, it's also called the Tanzanian shilling, while in Kenya, it's referred to as the Kenyan shilling. Uganda uses the Ugandan shilling, and Rwanda uses the Rwandan franc, the latter not being a direct synonym. Within the region, the currency is sometimes informally referred to as the "E.A. shilling" or simply "the shilling." Outside of East Africa, it may be referred to as the East African currency to distinguish it from other African currencies, like the West African CFA franc or the South African rand.
