The Eastern Orthodox Church is one of the world's oldest and most traditional Christian denominations. However, there are several synonyms for the Eastern Orthodox Church, including Orthodoxy, the Orthodox Church, or simply the Orthodox. Other terms such as the Byzantine Church or the Greek Orthodox Church may refer to specific national or historical branches of Eastern Orthodoxy. Additionally, the adjective "Eastern" is sometimes replaced with "Oriental," particularly when referring to one of the Oriental Orthodox Churches that differ from Eastern Orthodoxy in certain theological aspects. Nonetheless, all these terms ultimately describe a unified family of churches that are rooted in the early Christian traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean and Balkan regions.
