Ecotone refers to an area where two or more distinct ecosystems meet and interact. It is also known as a transition zone or a border zone. Other synonyms for ecotone include boundary area, edge zone, interfaçade, and fringe habitat. The term "edge effect" is also sometimes used to refer to the changes and unique interactions that occur in ecotones. In some cases, ecotone may also be referred to as a riparian zone if it occurs between a water body and the adjoining land. Ecotones are critical ecologically because they are habitats where species from different ecosystems interact, offering diverse opportunities for ecological succession, biodiversity conservation and management.
